Hood Tachometer Info

TACH1 HOOD TACHOMETER DATA PAGE TACH1

If you are trying to restore a 67-72 Pontiac, you have probably heard a dozen differnt versions of which tach you should use. I get dozens of emails from people telling me that they had a certain car and it had a certain part so they KNOW that it was right or wrong. Wile we appreciate this feedback, we would like to point out that Pontiac had the bad habit of changing parts mid year. Therefore, making it difficult to give an exact answer on any car. Back then you could even custom order just about anything. So even if it wasn't a standard production item, you could add the feature. For this reason many vehicles did "rolled off the assembly line" with a part that others will say it didn't. For this reason I won't say that anyone tach is the "correct" tach for your car. But I will try to help you find the tach you want. If you don't see the hood tach you are looking for let me know. I'll do my best to find it for you.

There is much debate as to wether Pontiac made a 5100 Redline or a 5000 Redline. Some even try to say it is a 5200 redline. Technically it is supposed to be a 5000 redline but because of screen printing limitations it looks like the redline starts at 5100.  So if we say 5100, 5200, or 5000 they are the same.

Looking for OHC-6 Tachs? We don't stock them but we can get them for you. Send us an email and let us know the year and the redline you are looking for. Be sure to let us know if you have an OHC-6.   (Images not available for OHC-6 Tachs)

Note: (We do NOT offer original GM tachs.) We do, however, offer repoduction tachs. The information is given below regarding the original GM part numbers is meant for reference only and to help you find the correct Reproduction hood tach.  If you do not see the reporduction tach that you are looking for, please contact us. We will do our best to find the tach you need.

WIRING: Our Wiring harnesses can be used with HEI and MSD Ignition. You can hook them up with the standard wiring harness that is enclosed with the tach. Our Tachs will work with MSD Ignition but you will probably require a tach adapter. We do not stock tach adapters. Each MSD setup is a little different. We suggest you contact MSD directly and ask them which tach adapter you would need based on which MSD you have. You can find them online at www.msdignition.com.

Humidity Control: During production years there was a big issue with moisture buildup in the hood tachs. GMs fix for this was to add a heater hose to pump heat in the tach. They also experimented with gaskets and a few other ideas. Unlike the original GM tachs, our tachs are sealed with silacone and are air tight. So there is no moisture buildup and no need for additional parts. With our Humidity Control Moisture Seal there is no need for any heating element or gaskets.

1967-1968 Pontiac Tachs

67 tach face clear

There is a lot of debate over which hood tach is for what years. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to the 1968 hood tach. Truthfully there were 3 hood tachs used for the 68. The tach shown here is the early tach. It was used on all 67's and on several 68s.

Early production (Until about mid December 67) used larger body size. Tach stood about 2" tall. The characters were circular in shape. The Needle was 3/4" shorter than  68 and had 5100 Redline. Identified by GM part# 6469012-H for the earlier tach style. This tach was used on A, B, & G Body Cars. REPRODUCTION AVAILABLE...This tach has a black face with white silk screen numbers. Has only one light in it just like the origional. It also uses 4 bolts for mounting. The 67-68 Tach Sits Higher and is larger than the 68-72 Tach. Note that the some firebirds used a slightly different tach. It was the same design and same redline but some had numbers with a green tint instead of the white. Reproduction available in both tachs.

To order our Reproduction Hood Tachs use the part numbers below:

The Second style tach used on the 68 was known as the Late Production Tach. This tach was used in assembly on 68 models that rolled off the assembly line after mid-December 67. This tach was a bit smaller in size than the previous tach. The characters on this tach are more oval shape than the previous tach. It had the same 5000 Red Line (Also referred to as the 5100 Red Line) but had a longer needle. Unlike the previous design it used only 2 bolts for mounting. And has 2 light bulbs instead of one. This Tach was used on A, B, & F Body Pontiacs. Identified by GM part#6469012-L. This tach used on all GTO std, HO, & RA I until end of production year. The Late Production Tach was used until the end of the production year. (Note: This is NOT The tach featured in the photo.) . We do NOT Stock this tach but it is available upon request. Please allow 10-14 business days for processing custom order tachs.

When ordering the 68 Late Tach 5000 Redline please use part# 68TACH-100

The 3rd tach used on 68s was only used on those made after Mid-March 1968 and only with RamAir II engines. This is generally referred to as the 68 tach. This tach also stood 2" high but had 5500 Redline. The 68 tach had a Steel-Blue face. This tach was used on A, B, & F Body Pontiacs. Original part was identified by GM part# 6469025-K. It was used for RA Production (when ordered). The tach body size for this 3rd edition tach was the same as the Late production tach. It was smaller in size than the 1967 tach and used only 2 bolts for mounting. It also had 2 light bulbs instead of one. One customer tells me that Pontiac only produced 110 Firebirds w/RamAir II and of these, only 8 were convertibles.(We have not yet verified this information but feel it is pretty close to accurate.) (Note: I don't have a photo of this tach yet but will update this ad as soon as I have one available to photograph.) Once again, as it is not a commonly requested item we do NOT stock this tach. However, it is available upon request. Please allow 10-14 business days for processing custom order tachs.

When ordering the 68 Steel Blue Face Tach 5500 Redline use part# 68TACH-101

So if we say 5100 or 5000 they are the same.

This tach was used on A, B, F, & G Body Pontiacs. This tach was nearly identical to the 5500 RedLine Tach. Truth be told, the only difference was the positioning of the redline.
