This tach was used on ’67 Pontiacs for
the full production year. Some Firebirds used a slightly different tach but most used this tach. We
do offer the Firebird tach but it is a custom order tach.
There is
a lot of debate over which hood tach is for ’68
Pontiacs. There
is a lot of confusion when it comes to the 1968 hood tachometer. Truthfully
there were 3 hood tachs used for the 1968 models. The
tach shown here is the early tach.
This Tach was used on all 1967's and early production
for 1968 Pontiacs (Until
about mid December 1967).
This tach used larger body size than later tachs.
The ‘67 Tach stood about 2" tall. The characters
were circular in shape. The Needle was 3/4" shorter than 68 and had 5100
Redline. Identified by GM part# 6469012-H for the earlier tach style. This tach was
used on A, B, & G Body Cars. REPRODUCTION AVAILABLE...This tach has a steel blue face with white silk screen numbers.
Many people mistaken the steel blue face for a black
face. The steel blue face looks black until you compare it to a tach that uses the black face like the 69-70 tach. This Early Production Tach only one light in it just like
the original. It also uses 4 bolts for mounting.
The
67-68 Tach Sits Higher and is larger than the 68-72 Tach. Note that the some Firebirds were slightly different.
The Firebird Tach was the same design and same
redline but some had numbers with a green tint instead of the white. Not all
Firebirds used this altered tach but a large number of
them did. We have no way of knowing which Firebirds used the greenish tinted tach and which ones used the standard Pontiac Tach. Original Tachs are
extremely hard to come by but we do offer excellent quality reproductions.
If you
are trying to restore a 68-72 Pontiac, you
have probably heard a dozen different versions of which tach
you should use. We have gotten hundreds of emails from people telling us that
they had a specific year car and it had a certain part so they KNOW that it was
right or wrong. Wile we appreciate this feedback, we
would like to point out that GM had the bad habit of changing parts mid year. Therefore, making it difficult to give an exact answer on any car.
Back then, if it didn’t come standard, you could custom order it. For this
reason many vehicles did rolled off the assembly line with a part that other
people will say it didn't.
Moisture
Control: Somewhere along the lines GM discovered that the hood mounted
tachometers had a problem with moisture building up inside the hood tach. Thus making it difficult to see the
tach face. Their fix was to ad a heater
element to the tach to keep the moisture from
building up. However, unlike the original tachs, our
reproduction tachs are sealed with an air tight
silicone seal. This prevents moisture from building up and eliminates the need
for a heater.
Wiring: Our
reproduction tachs come with the wiring harness,
wiring instructions, and a mounting diagram. Our tachs
will work with HEI as well as with MSD Ignition. Some people may have their
original harness but we strongly recommend that you use the new harness. If
your old harness has any cracks or shorts in it then it may damage the tach. We strongly suggest that you test all wiring
connections BEFORE installing, painting, or altering your tach
in any way.
MSD
Ignition may require an MSD Adapter. These Adapters are available from MSD
directly. There are several adapters so you will need to know which model MSD
Ignition you have to properly match up the correct adapter. We DO NOT STOCK MSD
adapters because there are too many to choose from. You can call the MSD

Make/Models: Our
hood tachs are pretty universal. While
Pontiac only
used them on a handful of automobiles they will work on most makes, models, and
years. We cannot guarantee that they
will work on all vehicles. Please don’t ask if it will work on a specific
vehicle because without testing it we cannot guarantee the fit. We have had
customers that have put our tachs on Chevys, Mopars, Fords, and more.
